The true test of the strength and durability of a building on the surface of the earth is a direct function of its foundation and the true measure of any human being can be found from the foundation or make up of such being. The level of impact we make in our world or in the lives of those around us is determined mainly by who we are, our values, what we believe in, our mindset and what informs every little decision we take. You may wonder how easy is it for Mr. A to get to the peak as it were of his goal, while Mr. B seems to be struggling to get by. There must be something that distinguishes the two and prepares them for wherever they may be placed in the world.
The foundation of man or his source is very important to his/her existence. Source can be your origin, it can be the basis of your mindset, your perception and focus in life. When a skyscraper is to be built, the builders take so much time to dig deep into the earth in order to lay a very solid foundation for the skyscraper unlike what obtains when a bungalow is to be built. Thus, the importance of the foundation in any life cannot be over emphasized. When we take a look at our fingers fully stretched out, we can make three quick observations;
- the thumb is far from the three middle fingers
- the three middle fingers and close together and have similar heights
- the last finger – though the smallest is quite close to the three middle ones
Why should you bother about these facts which are very visible to the naked eyes? What is the significance of this to the subject of Foundation? I will take a little time to expound on this concept of life. When we talk about foundation, it is very important to attain fruitfulness and accomplishment in life. It determines how far we can go with respect to attainment of our goals, visions and aspirations in life. It is very key to withstand the pressures that comes as we go through the journey of life. So, what is the place of the fingers in this? Have you heard this statement of life before?
“Whatever you do, you life is in your hands!”
As simple as the above statement is, only a few are able to grasp the magnitude of this metaphoric statement. The thumb in life represents the Youthful stage of life during which we have so much strength and ability to be all we can be. It is that stage of life in which we have the potential of taking great risks without any fear of the consequences and we are able to go the extra mile at this stage of our life. A look at our hands will reveal that the thumb is quite far from the others. In retrospect, this implies that youths have a different way of thinking and a totally different mindset and orientation from Adults or Old people (represented by the three middle fingers and last finger respectively). The youthful years is the formative stage of every living being and it is far from the adulthood age because youths operate in a totally different wavelength from adults and can take greater and higher risks than adults or old people. This is the Foundation Stage of every human being – whatever you do at this stage will determine how strong and reliable your ‘house’ will be when it faces the real challenges of life. The make-up (character, intelligence, attitude, mindset, orientation, wisdom, knowledge, self-discipline and exposure) of the individual during this stage is very key to success in life.

The make up articulated above is similar to the proportion of constituents of a typical concrete mix used in building foundations today. If the proportion is wrong, the foundation will be affected – though it may appear to be solid, it is only a matter of time before disaster comes calling. If we don’t have the right character, invest in building intelligence early, having the right attitude (because it determines our altitude and how far we will go), positive mindset, winning orientation, building wisdom and acquiring knowledge (knowledge gives us great edge), imbibing great self-discipline, then our foundation is going to fall to the pressures and storms that come during adulthood stages of life. The adulthood stage of life is represented by the three middle fingers.
“Your Choice determines your placement in Life“
A close look at these three middle fingers and the last finger shows that the gap between the three with respect to height is not much just as the gap between the last finger to the middle is quite close. The last finger represents old age and it shows that adulthood is not far from old age at all. This simply implies that, it is highly expedient to make hay while the sun shines i.e. whatever vocation, venture, business, profession or craft you want to major in, its better to start well and early in life. The key here is ensuring that the youthful years is well invested in building a solid foundation for life so that all issues that come our way on our path to adulthood will not cause any imbalance.
